While we tend to think of solar and battery storage as an emergency backup solution, the reality is that battery storage combined with solar offers a strong incentive for the unique power needs of businesses. Here are some of the ways that a battery storage system can benefit your facility:
Solar energy makes sense for businesses because it provides reliable electricity locked in at a rate lower than the utility company offers. However, for many businesses, the bulk of the electric bill is structured around demand charges (paying for a certain amount of grid capacity to be available during energy spikes) vs. volumetric charges (paying for the actual kilowatt-hours of electricity needed to power the business).
Solar electricity does a great job of reducing volumetric charges, and when there is coincident load (heavy power use during the day) it can have an impact on demand charges as well. However, this impact is significantly enhanced by the addition of smart batteries which allow stored solar energy to be released during high demand peaks, effectively lowering the amount of energy being demanded from the grid during this time period. You pay less of a demand charge because you have ‘shaved’ the load that is needed from the grid.
Earn revenue:Your facility may qualify to earn a financial incentive for lowering your facility’s load during times of the year when grid usage is at its peak. Participation is easy thanks to energy management software, making it so customers can participate without having to change or adapt their operating schedule to participate. The ReVision team will assist in helping you identify what programs you may be eligible for.
Increased resiliency:Battery storage systems can also play a useful role in providing emergency power to critical loads in your facility during a power outage. When combined with solar (or even other generator sources you may have already), you can extend your emergency power to deal with longer outage periods.
Meet your sustainability goals:Combining the power of the sun and batteries allows your business to save money and significantly reduce its carbon footprint. This technology is a win for your business, your customers, and our planet!
A battery storage system is connected to your meter to charge and discharge according to your electrical load. The system can charge from the grid or your solar array, and a control platform within the system automates when the battery discharges power, so you don’t have to manage this manually.
With a battery storage system, businesses with large electrical equipment and/or loads that turn on and off periodically can reduce spikes in their demand (and thus reduce their electric bills). Businesses in Maine and Massachusetts can also benefit significantly from enrolling in demand response programs with their systems.
Yes, battery storage systems work independently from solar panels and can be charged from the grid or other generating sources.
Yes, in most cases ReVision Energy can adapt your existing solar array to work with a battery storage system.
Savings will be dependent on several factors, including your electric utility, your rate type, and the system size you are able to install. The best way to get an accurate estimate for your facility is to reach out to our battery storage team; we provide a comprehensive cost and savings assessment free of charge.
Electric customers of participating ISO-NE utilities can enroll in one or more market service programs to earn revenue for curbing load at specific times of the year when the grid is most congested. Energy storage systems are also eligible for a 30% Federal Tax Credit. The ReVision team will identify any grant opportunities or local incentives your system may qualify for based on your location.
Battery storage allows you to store and flexibly discharge power when needed by reserving excess solar generation that your array would export back to the grid or charging from the grid when your facility’s load is low. The battery storage system discharges power when your facility’s load spikes, shaving the peaks that drive up the demand portion of your electricity bill.
If you want your battery storage system to keep your facility powered during an outage, it needs to be set up so that it can disconnect from the grid and run on its own. Once it does that, it’ll use whatever energy it has left to keep things running – unless you’ve also got another off-grid power source, like solar panels, that can step in if needed. Make sure to mention that you want your system to provide backup power to your ReVision representative early in the design process!
Once we deliver equipment to the site, the installation process may take two to five days, depending on the size of the system. This period does not include lead time for ordering system hardware or other site prep work necessary to install the battery once on-site.

It is recommended that systems have an annual preventative maintenance review to keep equipment at a maximum level of efficiency and avoid the potential for the system to be out of service due to damage. ReVision Energy will provide system owners with a maintenance guide that outlines any recommended annual activities necessary to maintain the manufacturer’s warranty and keep the system in peak condition.
On average, lithium-ion battery storage systems have a useful life of 10-15 years. At 10 years customers could explore the options for swapping out a module or updating the entire system.
Battery storage is an excellent addition to EV charging stations because it curbs any intermittent load that EV chargers add to your site. We can install the battery system on the same panel as the chargers, either using your existing electrical setup or a brand-new service just for those stations.
Some factors we consider are your facility’s consumption profile (captured through interval data), the electric rate tariff you are on with your electric utility, and the size of the service at your facility.
Batteries help your organization consume electricity more efficiently by managing when and how you purchase power through fossil fuel resources like the grid, as well as maximizing your on-site solar consumption if your system is coupled with your PV array.
Battery storage is eligible for various federal, state, and even utility grant programs. A ReVision representative can advise you on these options based on your location and use case. Additionally, ReVision can connect you with third-party financing entities that offer Power Purchase Agreements or loan options to mitigate upfront investment in the system.
